High school cheerleader Tricia Wheeler didn’t make it to her graduation because a bullet went through her heart and killed her.
Twenty years later, a journalist is investigating Tricia’s supposed suicide for a book. Suddenly, a second cheerleader is dead and the body count in the small West Virginia town continues to rise.
For Joshua Thornton, the case is personal. The reopening of the Wheeler case stirs up memories and feelings for a girl who died without knowing his true feelings for her. Now, the newly-elected prosecutor is challenged to use everything he’s got to find out what had really happened to Tricia and stop the killing.

From the Author
Frequently, books are compared to children, with their authors being the parents.
This is a good comparison on many levels. There's the joy when the book idea is conceived. The anxiety when the author embarks on moving forward with composing it. The excitement and fear when it is released to the world. Then, there is the hard work that comes afterward, as the author introduces their baby to the outside world: readers.
Staying with this comparison, psychologists claim every child, even siblings, grow up in different households based on what is going on with their parents and family. The same holds true with books and their authors.
Every book is different--even books written by the same author.
This is my round-about way of explaining my first two books, the Joshua Thornton Mysteries, to readers.
A Small Case of Murder is my debut novel. I started writing it in 1998. It was originally released in 2004, and named finalist in the mystery category for the Independent Publishers Book Award. The second book in the series, A Reunion to Die For, followed in 2007.
Even though both A Small Case of Murder and A Reunion to Die For were critical successes, as I honed my writing skills, I came to realize they could be much better. Also, with the success of the Mac Faraday Mysteries, I feared that fans were perplexed by the different writing style and tone. So, I took both books out of print.
In 2011, by request from readers, I revisited A Small Case of Murder, re-edited, and re-released it. I also re-released A Reunion to Die For.
The Joshua Thornton Mysteries are not cozies. They are not as light as my mysteries set on Deep Creek Lake. In my debut novel, fans will meet Joshua Thornton shortly after the death of his wife. He is also the protagonist in A Reunion to Die For. In Shades of Murder (the third installment of the Mac Faraday Mysteries) Joshua meets Cameron Gates and they become the Lovers in Crime.
It is with pride, and fear, that I bring you A Small Case of Murder and A Reunion to Die For. As you sit back to read them, enjoy my first crack at writing mysteries.

Small town murders and much more
By Armchair Interviews
In this second book in Lauren Carr's series, the little town of Chester, West Virginia is poised the 20th reunion of the Class of 1985. County Prosecutor, Joshua Thornton, was a member of that class; as was his friend and local journalist, Jan Martin; nationally known news writer, Gail Reynolds; and local businesswoman, Margo Connor. They, as well as other classmates have a tragedy in common--the death of popular cheerleader, Tricia Wheeler, of a single gunshot wound during the fall of their senior year.
When Gail comes to the Chester High reunion preparing to write a book about what she believes was Tricia's murder, things get tense. After interviewing several people about Tricia's last day, Gail is murdered. As county prosecutor and as well as old friend, Joshua begins an investigation that eventually turns on him. A new man in the sheriff's department thinks Josh is the chief suspect. So Joshua must clear his own name and reputation while searching for answers to his former friend's deaths.
Carr complicates the plot at this point by having a current Chester cheerleader murdered near the school in a manner reminiscent of the 1985 incident. Persons that Gail had interviewed for her book are also shot. It seems that must all be connected, but how? This is only one of the many puzzling questions Josh Thornton must find answers to.
Carr takes us on an enjoyable journey into the working and private life of Joshua Thornton. I liked the fact that he, his family and close friends seem to be decent, honest, and ethical.
However, I do feel that Carr muddies up the story with too many named characters (at least 45 people), some of whom do little to move the plot forward and could have been better called simply waitress or cleaning woman.
All of the murders that take place within a short time frame and in a small community are a bit of a stretch since none are gang or crime syndicate hits. Nonetheless, the book is fun and all loose ends tie-up at the end without total suspension of credibility.
Armchair Interviews says: Lots of puzzling questions need answers to solve these murders.

Pretty Good Mystery
By Tracie Warren
Wanted to love this book and was rooting for it all the way. I like the complex premise of mysterious murders surrounding a high school reunion, but it lacks a bit in places. Still, it's a fairly good read, but not great.

Murder mystery with lots of twists & turns
By Rhonda
A Reunion to Die For: A Joshua Thornton Mystery by Lauren Carr
4 STARS
I admit I have enjoyed lauren's murder mysteries. They are complicated, lots of murder suspects that keep you guessing on who did what murders and why. I usually am able to figure out part but not all the answers. The characters are a mixed bag. Some you love, some you love to hate and hope they are the guilty party.
This is the second Joshua Thornton mystery book. I do like the newer one better but this one kept me reading to find out all the answers.
Joshua is the new proscuter for the county. He is a widower with 5 kids and one dog. He has moved his family back to his hometown. His cousin Tad is a dr. and medical examiner. They are good friends and work close together on some cases.
Joshua has a lot of ladies chasing him some from high school, some are even lawyers.
He does not understand it.
A cheerleader is shot to death after practice. His son chases down the killer but he doesn't catch him.
A new detective is hired and put in charge of the other detectives. Joshua is not impressed with him at all. He even checks him out. Sean jumps to conclusions without asking all the questions than trys to make his case fit.
He tries to arrest Joshua for murder of an old friend who he slept with once back in high school. Gail has been stocking him and he did not even know it.
Joshua opens a old case that had another high school cheerleader he was friends back in the day with. It was ruled a sucide even when the evidence proves it was not. Beside the fact thier was no gun left at the scene.
The story takes twists and turns all over the place till everything is revealed. I like Joshua and hope to read more books with him as the main character in the future.
I was given this ebook to read in exchange of honest review by Lauren.
